La pellicola è suddivisa in tre storie dell'orrore, ricamate da racconti di scrittori tra i quali figura Stephen King. L'intreccio narrativo principale è una rappresentazione in stile fiaba popolare; le storie vengono raccontate da un bambino che riesce così ad allungare il tempo per non esser cucinato dalla strega che lo ha rapito per mangiarselo. Il gatto nero appare nel secondo episodio, mentre il primo vede dei giovanissimi Christian Slater e Steve Buscemi alle prese con una mummia.

Un ragazzo viene catturato da una strega; per cercare di distrarla ed evitare così di finire “arrostito” le racconta tre storie all’insegna dell’orrore. La prima ha per protagonista una mummia, la seconda un gatto dai poteri paranormali e la terza un giuramento particolare. Ispirato ad una serie televisiva di successo negli USA “Tales from the Darkside” (titolo originale) è un discreto film a episodi. Diretto da un (allora) esordiente John Harrison (grande appassionato di horror, collaboratore e attore per lo “Zombi” di Romero) la pellicola si basa su tre racconti che portano le grandi firme, nell’ordine, di Arthur Conan Doyle, Stephen King, e Michael McDowell. Divertente e scorrevolissimo non lesina sangue e scene semi-splatter; conviene evitare di vederlo trasmesso in televisione perché “inevitabilmente” censurato, recuperatelo a noleggio.

Okay anthology horror movie, the first one, "Lot 249", was the best due to the cast (Slater, Buscemi, Moore) and also enjoyed "Lover's Vow" even if the animatronic effects weren't the best. However, "Cat from Hell" really dragged the film as a whole down, almost dozed off a couple of times during that segment, although the ending of that one was gross. The wrap-around story was fine with a fun conclusion I guess. 3.5/5

"Tales from the Darkside" was a fairly entertaining, tongue-in-cheek, horror anthology TV series. For a movie, however, you'd think they would have turned it up a few notches ...especially with the talent backing up the writing. But, basically what we have here is 3 stories that are no different than watching 3 episodes of the TV show. It's not bad - in fact, I enjoyed it for what it was - it just wasn't anything special. - DrNostromo.com
